Exam BurnOut - How to cope with it

Question:
My exams are in a couple of days. I have now reached the point where I don't care anymore, I am not even nervous; I just want the exams to be over! I am now worried that I am going to fail due to this apathy. Is this lack of interest a sign of exam stress and what can I do?

Advice:
Feelings of burn out are a common symptom of mental stress. You may have studied for so long now that you have reached your peak and are now feeling saturated; if so, the good news about that is that you are now ready for the exams. Stress management techniques that are useful to control these feelings that you describe are mental exercises such as:

Time Out
This is a very simple form of relaxation designed to suit the individual. Therefore you must choose something that works for you. It is all about feeling good about yourself and your achievements and pampering yourself a little! For example, you could take a day off and treat yourself to some physical relaxation exercises such as yoga, swimming, walking, picnic with friends, indulging in your favorite sport. Or choose mental relaxation like a good movie, music, or meeting friends. The physical and mental exercises have a physiological effect on your body and can help you feel relaxed and energized.

Positive Thinking
This is a very simple form of mental relaxation, again designed to suit the individual. Firstly, choose some form of affirmation that works for you, such as "I am doing the best I can.." or "I give myself permission to relax.." Then repeat the affirmation to yourself whenever you need it. You will be surprised how a simple command to your brain can calm a situation. Secondly, remind yourself why you are doing the exams and remember all your good points and favorite areas. It is a good idea to make a list of all your good points for the exam, then you will see how many resources you really have.

Enjoy the time off and make a positive decision to return to the work/study the next day feeling energized and refreshed and ready for anything.

Good Luck.
